Gigs?

Big Drums

If you care about this sort of thing, I play Pearl EXL Select drums. It's a seven-piece set, from which I pull whatever sized kit is suitable for the gig at hand. That might range from two or three small drums for a jazz trio up to the full seven-piece set for shows or big fusion bands.

The Pearl EXLs are medium-thickness, laquer-finished, natural wood shells (not plastic wrapped) which offer a good balance between woody warmth for studio and jazz work, but enough punch for rock-and-roll, big bands, or shows.

Little Drums

In situations where the volume needs to be extremely soft or the space is extremely limited, I play a Rims Headset -- a "fold-up" set without shells. The Rims kit is easy to move, fast to setup, and remarkably good sounding for it's size and weight.

Actually, there have been a couple situations in the past when I've even used the Rims Headset to play shows. If they are mic'd properly, they're capable of some amazing sounds. However, their greatest attribute is their ultra-tiny "footprint" in small clubs or private party rooms where space is at a premium. They take up less than 1/3 the space of my full, seven-piece Pearl set.

Sound System

In case it's ever needed, I also own a small P.A. system consisting of an eight channel, 100-watt, powered mixing board and two Peavey "112 International" speakers (with stands). The 112 International speakers each contain a 12" Black Widow woofer and a 12"x4" horn.

They are extremely efficient speakers, which make the 100-watt board capable of providing enough power to cover fairly large rooms with up to 300-400 people.

Brass

Make no mistake about it... I am NOT an accomplished brass player. However, I can play enough trumpet or valve trombone to add an extra horn part to a "rehearsed" riff being played by other horn players in, say, a beach group or oldies band, as long as I have a chance to work the parts out in advance. And yes, given the right rhythm style and enough time to work it out, I can usually play horn parts at the same time I'm playing drums.
